What is an Ideal Customer Profile?

An Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) is a short description of the kind of company that gets the most value from what you sell — and that you can reach and close efficiently. It's the filter that decides who you go after, and ignoring it is the most common reason outbound quietly fails.

ICP vs. buyer persona

These get muddled constantly. An ICP describes the company: its industry, size, location, business model, and situation. A buyer persona describes the person inside that company you actually talk to: their role, their goals, and what they care about.

You need both. The ICP tells you which doors to knock on; the persona tells you who answers and what to say to them.

What goes into an ICP

A useful ICP is specific enough to exclude most of the market. Common attributes:

  • Firmographics — industry, company size, revenue, location
  • Business model — how they make money, who they sell to
  • Situation or trigger — recent growth, hiring, funding, a new regulation, a tool they already use
  • Fit signals — the things that made your best existing customers a great match

The fastest way to build one: look at the handful of customers you've served best and ask what they have in common. That pattern is your ICP.

Why a sharp ICP matters more than a big list

A broad, vague ICP produces a giant list of weak prospects, generic messaging, and low reply rates. A narrow, specific ICP produces a smaller list you can actually research and personalise — which is what earns replies.

It also keeps costs sane: chasing everyone burns time and enrichment spend on companies that were never going to buy.

Common questions

How many ICPs should I have?

Start with one. If you genuinely sell to distinct types of company with different value props, you might add a second — but most SMBs spread themselves too thin across too many ICPs rather than too few.

What if I don't have customers yet?

Then your ICP is a hypothesis. Pick the company type you believe fits best, target a small group, and let the conversations tell you whether you were right. Refine it as you learn — an ICP is meant to evolve.

Does Piqe help define my ICP?
