What is a market map?

A market map is a structured, scored view of every company that fits your Ideal Customer Profile in a given market — not a database dump, but the actual universe of accounts worth reaching, ranked by fit. It's the difference between outbound that's aimed and outbound that's sprayed.

A market map vs. a bought list

A purchased contact list is whatever a database returns for a few broad filters — often stale, often missing the smaller and regional companies, and identical to the list your competitors bought.

A market map is built deliberately for your ICP from multiple sources, then deduplicated, verified, and scored by how well each account fits. It aims for completeness of the right market, not raw volume.

How a good market map is built

The best maps combine sources rather than leaning on one database:

 • Business directories and registries for coverage of smaller and local companies
 • Places-style location data for businesses with a physical footprint
 • Trade and industry directories for niche verticals
 • B2B contact data to find the right people inside each account

Each account is then enriched, verified, and scored so the highest-fit companies rise to the top.

Why it makes outbound work

When you know the whole field and how each account ranks, you can spend your effort where it pays off — researching and personalising for high-fit accounts instead of blasting a generic list. You also avoid the embarrassment of contacting companies that were never a fit.

It's the groundwork that makes everything downstream — messaging, sequencing, qualification — more accurate.

Common questions

How is a market map different from a CRM?

A CRM tracks companies you're already engaging. A market map is the upstream view of everyone you could engage who fits your ICP — the source you feed into the CRM as you start conversations.

How long does a market map take to build?

For a defined ICP, a first scored map can be ready within days — then it's refined as outreach and replies reveal which segments respond best.

Does Piqe build the market map for me?

Yes — building and scoring the market map for your specific ICP is the starting point of how Piqe works, using Places, registries, and trade directories on top of B2B contact data.
